ABOUT FEATURE
Sync Error Messages Feature was designed for a major construction management platform’s application to allow users to manage the errors when the users working on the construction field received sync failure updates on their mobile iOS/Android device. This feature addressed critical user experience issues that were causing frustration and escalating support tickets.
MY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a UX Designer, I led the redesign of the error messaging system—under the guidance of my designer manager—for the platform's mobile app. This was my first project upon joining the company, requiring quick onboarding to understand the complex ecosystem while delivering critical improvements to a struggling feature.
I collaborated with cross-functional team (Product, Design, Engineering) to design and implement solution. For this project I also collaborated with UX Writing team to maintain brand guidelines and messaging consistency.
CONTEXT
Construction workers lost critical
field updates due to sync failures
This enterprise B2B construction tech product allows field workers to complete digital checklists on construction sites and sync their updates to a central system. This sync functionality is crucial for real-time information sharing across project teams, especially when decisions depend on up-to-date field data.
When sync failures occurred, the previous error messaging system provided little to no clarity, creating significant frustration among construction professionals working on sites with unstable connectivity.
OUR SOLUTION
Three-tiered Error Messaging Framework
To transform the user experience during sync failures, we designed an integrated three-tiered error messaging framework that provided clarity and control at every level of interaction:
Inline Error Messages: Precise Problem Identification
Within each checklist, contextual error messages appear directly alongside affected items, showing exactly what failed to sync and why—whether it's an attachment, input field, note, or photo..
Checklist Card View : Immediate Awareness
The redesigned card view provides instant visual indication when sync issues occur, allowing users to immediately identify which checklists contain problems without needing to open them.
Centralized Error List - Comprehensive Management
For complex checklists with multiple issues, a dedicated error summary view consolidates all problems in one location, enabling efficient review and resolution of multiple sync failures.
